To say the least, TOWER HEIST is a very funny film. Actually, that may be an overstatement. What I mean to say is that the first thirty minutes in which Eddie Murphy was barely onscreen were not very funny. But when the man came into action, the big laughs began.
If you were looking to watch this film to see a good comedy from Matthew Broderick, let me make it clear that you should not see this film. His days as Ferris Bueller are well over, and he delivers a stiff, dull performance. If it weren’t for the talents of Eddie Murphy, Ben Stiller, and Casey Affleck, this would be very dull.
Brett Ratner used his experience from directing such films as RUSH HOUR and X-MEN: THE LAST STAND to make this a smooth mix of action, crime, and comedy. He makes a film a little too familiar to Steven Soderbergh’s OCEAN’S ELEVEN, adding in only a few new things, such as acrophobic views out of windows fifty stories up. (*Shiver.*) Original or not, it was very funny and enjoyable, and if you really want the truth, Eddie Murphy was THE big thing. Without him, TOWER HEIST would have bombed.
