I watched this film and was honestly abhorred by the way the children were abused. I became more focused on the poverty centric premise of the story rather than the main character’s triumph in life. It even had widespread criticisms about using actual street children by the Director to make the film more tangible through marketing and it digusts me with the aforementioned intentions just to win the Oscar!
Sorry to hear you didn’t like it. I hadn’t heard about the director using street children, but I can honestly say I believe it. And I know, the way they show the abuse put on children (especially the one scene when the two men pour hot oil in a child’s eyes) is quite disturbing, but I believe that’s what makes it more authentic.
