Youth in Revolt

image

Bottom Line: Nothing new, but entertaining coming-of-age tale.

“In movies the good guy gets the girl. In real life it’s usually the pr–k.” –Michael Cera as Nick Twisp

Directed by: Miguel Arteta
Starring: Adhir Kalyan, Ari Graynor, Erik Knudsen, Fred Willard, Jean Smart, Michael Cera, Portia Doubleday, Ray Liotta, Steve Buscemi, Zach Galifianakis

I can’t say I’ve never seen something like YOUTH IN REVOLT before. I’ve seen countless coming-of-age dramas, everything from the timeless classics (THE BREAKFAST CLUB) to the instantly forgettable (THE LAST SONG). There is absolutely nothing about the film that makes it anomalous in any way, shape, or form. There is, however, a wonderfully bittersweet taste that makes this seriocomic moral questioning so watchable.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

image

Bottom Line: Quirky, dazzling, funny.

Directed by: Edgar Wright
Starring: Alison Pill, Anna Kendrick, Aubrey Plaza, Ellen Wong, Johnny Simmons, Kieran Culkin, Mark Webber, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Michael Cera

Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) is a 22-year-old nerd and the bassist for an up-and-coming rock group called Sex Bomb-Omb. At the opening of this quirky comedy, he has a “fake girlfriend” Knives, 17-year-old and in high school. Bored, he meets Ramona Flowers, a girl who recently moved in, and instantly falls in love with her. Soon after their relationship begins, Ramona informs Scott that in order to continue dating her, he must not only battle but defeat every one of her “7 Evil Exes”.

The Grey

image

Bottom Line: Jack London–as well as anyone who enjoys a good action-thriller–would be proud of The Grey.

Directed by: Joe Carnahan
Starring: Ben Bray, Dallas Roberts, Dermot Mulroney, Frank Gillo, James Badge Dale, Joe Anderson, Liam Neeson, Nonso Anozie

THE GREY sets up a story about a huntsman named Ottway (Liam Neeson) and six oil workers, who are stranded in Alaska after their plane crashes. They must learn to survive here, as there may not be a possibility of them even getting home. There to plague their survival is a ruthless, merciless, hungry pack of wolves. Possibly the most disappointing component to the film is its story. This is a recurring story we’ve seen and read countless times. We usually see the conflict set on a deserted island, but it still seems all too similar in the frozen land of Alaska.
